Changing your vet job can be an intimidating proposition. There is little spare time to job hunt, there’s a tendency for vets to be self-deprecating – so promoting yourself isn’t easy, and we’ve all heard stories from peers that make us grateful for what we’ve got – better the devil you know and all that.

Whether you are looking to stay in the same job or move to pastures new, salary negotiation is inevitable in permanent vet jobs and locum vet jobs. Some employers will perform annual salary reviews as standard, but that doesn’t eliminate the need to discuss salary with your manager. Routine reviews are predominantly inflationary (if that!). As you progress through your career you will gain insight, expertise, and practical ability – this should be reflected in your salary.

Cardiology is a much-needed sub-discipline of veterinary internal medicine. Auscultation of the heart should be performed on every clinical examination. From puppies and kittens to geriatric patients, heart disease happens. Correct and early diagnosis is vital in preserving patients’ lives and quality of life. General practice vets, understandably, have limits to their expertise, hence the high demand for veterinary cardiologists at the referral level.

Curiosity, nine lives, and a dislike of water – three things most people associate with cats – but are they true? Do cats hate water? And if so, how do you bathe a cat?

Reasons to bathe a cat

Before bathing your cat, it’s important to think about whether a bath is necessary. There may be a better solution. Genuine reasons your cat might need a bath include:

Your cat has a skin condition, and your veterinarian recommends bathing in a medical shampoo

Your cat has a severe infestation of fleas, and its coat is full of flea dirt (Note: flea dirt is digested blood, so it turns the bathwater red. This can look scary, but it’s the dirt, not your cat)

A large area of your cat’s coat is muck or toxins that could harm your cat if licked or won’t come off with a brush

I wrote this article for charity veterinary hospital Anicira as part of their educational blog. As a vet, writing about cats is incredibly fulfilling for me, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. Veterinary writing is a new challenge but I’m really enjoying it and love to see my pet articles on the web.
